Buying In > by Rob Walker
I was lucky enough to receive an advanced copy of Rob Walkers’ new book > Buying In: The Secret Dialogue Between What We Buy and Who We Are < I’ve been reading it for about the past two weeks and just finished it a few days ago. All in all,.. I really enjoyed the book,… I especially liked learning about Murketing >
Murketing, a driving theme of Buying In, is derived from the words murky and marketing. The term refers to the blurring of the line that used to separate commercial persuasion and everyday life.
Funny thing is as I was reading the book I was experiencing Murketing first hand. First @ Movement (Detroit’s Electronic Music Festival) here in Detroit. The Red Bull Music Academy had their own stage set up (Where I watched Newcleus perform “Jam On It” one of the best moments for me) And now this week the Red Bull Air Race is taking place on the Detroit River. Yet another Murketing tactic from Red Bull. (Oh and Scion was @ Movement too > another Murketer.) Red Bull and Scion are just two of the brands Rob talks about in the book. He also talks about > PBR, Ecko, Timberland, Converse, Apple, the Hundreds, American Apparel, etc.
One of the other things I learned while reading Buying In is that I AM NOT IMMUNE to Marketing/Advertising. I used to always say Marketing/Advertising does not work on me,.. that I can see right through it, put it into context, etc. Well Mr. Walker showed me that i’m wrong and that there’s actually a secret dialogue going on.The good news is that now that I understand the way Marketing/Advertising works on me,.. there’s no way it will ever work again! HA jk,.. looks like the battle will continue.
Thanks to Piers + Noah over @ (likemind) for the books. I still have 7 copies of Buying In left for anyone who’s interested. The only catch is that I buy you a cup of coffee too. Pretty sweet deal. e-mail me > Nev {at} idUnited {.} com < if you’re interested.
{Disclosure: I was involved in the Movement Festival, but not directly with Red Bull or Scion)
