Detroit Make it Here

Detroit Make it Here is a new site that is setting out to connect + profile + empower + etc. creative professionals in the Metro Detroit Area. I was recently profiled for the work I did for Paxahua/Movement 08. You can read the article HERE.

Jump to the next page to read some clarifications I wanted to make as well as share what I think about the Detroit Make it Here site.

Clarifications

Muftari says the work is as important after the festival as before it. “The customers, the individuals at DEMF want to share their experiences — #1 why just have an official video?” he asks. #2 “A lot of this is about planting seeds.”

#1 >  Meaning,.. embrace the videos your fans make for you and share (the good ones) with everyone. Not just the “official” videos you choose to release.

#2 > Meaning,.. (i’m actually not entirely sure what I meant by this @ the time) I was probably referring to all the content we were putting out on the blog (artist interviews, pics, videos, etc.) leading up to the festival. I had  85 + posts up in 4 weeks. Which in my opinion is better than releasing a “traditional” press release once a week. No?

”Ten thousand or 3,000 passionate individuals that help spread the word for you because they are crazy about your product of service is much more cost effective.”

Meaning,.. Using Social Media to accomplish that goal is much more realistic,.. as opposed to using a traditonal media approach (tv, newpaper, radio) where you are innterupting hundreds of thousands (millions) of individuals who could care less about your product or service.

So what do I think about the Detroit Make it Here site?… Honestly,..I love what the site is setting out to do,.. it’s definitely something Detroit Creatives need. So it’s great to see the effort. I’m very curious to see where it all goes.

However,… In terms of Social Media & Web 2.0, etc. I just don’t think they get it,.. or if they do,.. they’re not executing correctly (in my opinion) at all.

If you read the comments I made on my artice,.. you’ll see I mention the word SHARING. There is nothing on the site that makes it easy for me to share the content. I couldn’t even add hyperlinks to my blog,.. or CampfireNYC in the comments section.

Also @ the bottom of the site it clearly states >

Use of editorial content without permission is strictly prohibited.

Are you serious? How do you expect your site to go “viral” if I can’t even share the content that is “user generated” I’m a bit confused? Are you sure you’re trying to reach out to young creatives?…

Content is meant to be free and shared,.. not controlled by a legal department.

The site still acts like a portal of controlled information,.. instead of an open sourced, user generated site that it says it is.

Overall the design/layout of the site is not very friendly or intuitive. Not sure what you want me to do? Create another Social Network profile?.. Could have just used Ning.

With that being said,…. : ) I’m glad to know the site is still in Beta. I’m sure a lot of things I have mentioned are already being worked on,.. or are under consideration,.. OR after reading this maybe some lightbulbs will go off?.. Either way I will definitely monitor the progress and watch closely. It’s in my interest to watch a project like this succeed!

Thanks for profiling me ; )

PS -  There’s more,… but I think we should set up a meeting so we can have a conversation.
