The Power of Green Housing

At the last months (likemind) Detroit,.. I invited Leslie C Horn, CEO and co-founder of The Power of Green HousingTM out to tell to us about her 17 unit Container/Condo project being built in Detroit this fall, as well as what we can expect to see in the future.

First off who are you and what do you do?

Leslie Horn, CEO & President and Patric Horn, COO & Project Manager of The Power of Green HousingSM … we are a brother and sister team. Leslie lives in Detroit full time and brother Patric resides in San Diego commuting to Detroit approximately 2 weeks a month. We have rehabbed over 20 houses in the city of Detroit over last 2 year. The Power of Green HousingSM is dedicated to building affordable houses with a savings of 60% energy costs to the end user. We are currently developing Exceptional Green Living on Rosa Parks, a 17 unit condo complex consisting of 1, 2 & 3 bedroom units near Wayne State University and able to build for less than $100/sq foot. After this “prototype” we will take our building into a warehouse and manufacture this type of building lowering our costs by an additional 20-25%.

In addition to the two of us, we continue to build our team of architects, builders, media and marketing professionals, attorneys and associates to promote and propel this company in becoming the leader in green, sustainable and energy efficient housing.

Here’s how it usually works. A builder builds a bunch of homes,.. spends a ton of money on TV, billboard, newspapers, magazines, etc. BORING.

That is until LJ Urban stepped in with some innovation and new ideas. A new project by California eco-urban design firm LJ Urban aims to make giving more concrete—quite literally—by matching its sales of eco-urban homes domestically with funds to build homes in the impoverished African nation of Burkina Faso. LJ Urban calls it Real Estate Development 2.0!

For every 100,000 visitors between now and July 1st, LJ Urban will fund the complete training of a local Burkina Faso mason to build houses for families that need them. Funding up to 20 masons (for now).

The Good project was inspired by Toms Shoes, a project that donates a pair of shoes for every one it sells.

The upcoming Olympics’ Aquatic Center, commonly referred to as the Water Cube for its translucent, bubbly design, had its long awaited opening last week for tourists and early testing of the pools.  Looks pretty sweet.

Camp Nou

Spotted over @ Coolhunting

“Home to one of the biggest fútbol teams in the world, FC Barcelona, Camp Nou is getting a major makeover courtesy of British architects Norman Foster + Partners….” the most eye-catching part of the redesign is the multi-colored exterior and retractable roof.”

“Made of polycarbonate and glass, the exterior panels can change color and tilt, patterning the entire stadium or transforming it into a giant screen. Think of it as a macro-pixelated television. The renovation will be completed for the 2011/12 season.”

Room with a View

The picture you see here was taken from the 85th floor of the Burj Dubai. To date, it is the world’s tallest skyscraper, although it will be overtaken by the kilometer high Burj Mubarak Al-Kabir in Kuwait when it’s completed. All I know is that this picture is amazing. And so is the price tag to build it >

Cost: US$800,000,000.00
