The Power of Green Housing
At the last months (likemind) Detroit,.. I invited Leslie C Horn, CEO and co-founder of The Power of Green HousingTM out to tell to us about her 17 unit Container/Condo project being built in Detroit this fall, as well as what we can expect to see in the future.
First off who are you and what do you do?
Leslie Horn, CEO & President and Patric Horn, COO & Project Manager of The Power of Green HousingSM … we are a brother and sister team. Leslie lives in Detroit full time and brother Patric resides in San Diego commuting to Detroit approximately 2 weeks a month. We have rehabbed over 20 houses in the city of Detroit over last 2 year. The Power of Green HousingSM is dedicated to building affordable houses with a savings of 60% energy costs to the end user. We are currently developing Exceptional Green Living on Rosa Parks, a 17 unit condo complex consisting of 1, 2 & 3 bedroom units near Wayne State University and able to build for less than $100/sq foot. After this “prototype” we will take our building into a warehouse and manufacture this type of building lowering our costs by an additional 20-25%.
In addition to the two of us, we continue to build our team of architects, builders, media and marketing professionals, attorneys and associates to promote and propel this company in becoming the leader in green, sustainable and energy efficient housing.

Lung Ashtray
Spotted @ Osocio >
Saatchi & Saatchi London made this for Quit, the stop smoking charity. It shows a set of lungs, transparent in the middle so you can see all the discarded cigarette ends inside the bin.
Great visual to get you thinking about how nasty smoking is for your lungs & health in general.
Reverse Graffiti
This has been around for awhile now,.. but still worth sharing.

ECHOage = Best B-day Present
Another brilliant idea spotted over @ SpringWise >
ECHOage is a company started by two mothers who wanted to put an end to wasteful birthday parties (mediocre gifts, wrapping paper, etc.) Traditionally everyone comes over and brings your child a cheap toy that he/she will most likely play with for a day and then toss. ECHOage puts a brilliant stop to the *wasteful* b-day party. See how it works after the jump >
Benetton + Micro Lending

Great project spotted over @ PSFK >
The United Colors of Benetton has teamed up with Senegalese singer Youssou N’Dour for a global campaign in support of Birima, a micro-credit program in Senegal that was founded by the singer. Similar to other micro-finance organizations like Kiva, Birima offers zero interest loans to Senegalese entrepreneurs to get their projects off ground. Additionally, borrowers also receive assistance from Birima advisors on their project and collectively develop a business plan with them.
I love seeing projects like this that make an impact!
Beware of Packaging
What happens when a product that is NOT good for you,.. is packaged nicely?… Does it make it a little better?.. That’s what this ad for FAD (Foundation Against Drug Addiction, Spain) is trying to bring into question. When you’re exposed to something on a regular basis, does it eventually become more acceptable and mainstream?
This ad for cocaine (as well as the others for hash, ecstasy and marijuana) are obviously NOT good for you. But when you put the cocaine in a perfume bottle,.. it looks like it could be in any fashion/style magazine out there. Can you think of some everyday products (water, tobacco, cola) that are packaged nicely,.. but NOT good for you or the environment?….

TAP Project 2008
The TAP Project is a remarkably simple way to raise money and awareness for the Worlds Water Crisis.
Beginning Sunday, March 16 through Saturday, March 22, restaurants will invite their customers to donate a minimum of $1 for the tap water they would normally get for free. For every dollar raised, one child will have clean drinking water for 40 days. Or 40 children for one day.

(RED) Auction = $42.6million
There was a lot of LOVE in the air yesterday, especially for the (RED) auction. How much LOVE?…
An auction at Sotheby’s organized by rocker-activist Bono and artist Damien Hirst raised $42.6 million Thursday night to fight AIDS in Africa.
In kicking off the Valentine’s Day sale, to which over 60 top contemporary artists donated museum-quality work, Bono led the crowd in a sing-along of the Beatles’ “All You Need Is Love.”
Bono said he was pleased by the results of the auction, which far exceeded the expected proceeds of $28 million and pushed his charity’s total take to the $100 million mark.
“It is a historic night for artists, an extraordinary night in New York City. I am very moved.”
LOVE was definitely in the air and in some Wallets!

Buy one house, give one free
Here’s how it usually works. A builder builds a bunch of homes,.. spends a ton of money on TV, billboard, newspapers, magazines, etc. BORING.
That is until LJ Urban stepped in with some innovation and new ideas. A new project by California eco-urban design firm LJ Urban aims to make giving more concrete—quite literally—by matching its sales of eco-urban homes domestically with funds to build homes in the impoverished African nation of Burkina Faso. LJ Urban calls it Real Estate Development 2.0!
For every 100,000 visitors between now and July 1st, LJ Urban will fund the complete training of a local Burkina Faso mason to build houses for families that need them. Funding up to 20 masons (for now).
The Good project was inspired by Toms Shoes, a project that donates a pair of shoes for every one it sells.
