CLEAR is the NEW GREEN

clearmagcover1.jpg

Clear Magazine (based in Royal Oak, MI) has announced the publication of its first tree-less, 100 percent recyclable magazine. Printed on YUPO® synthetic papers, Clear’s latest issue, themed “fame underground,” premiered at December’s Design Miami/Basel festival, where Clear was also a media partner. This environmentally friendly publication is the brainchild of Clear founder and creative director Emin Kadi. [watch video of Emin showcasing “fame underground”]

“Our goal is to provide readers with stunning presentations of the world’s most interesting and creative artists and events. Our new partnership with Yupo allows us to do so in an environmentally responsible, respectful way. Design Miami/Basel is the perfect occasion to share our green accomplishment,” says publisher Emin Kadi.

Clear’s unique, limited edition “green” solution closes the gap on source reduction and recycling. YUPO® is completely waterproof, stain resistant and very durable. YUPO® papers’ light weight allows significant fuel reduction in shipping and a lower overall carbon footprint. Should one wish to dispose of the issue, it may be placed in a recycling bin with any other plastic items, and it will be fully recycled.

It’s great to see such an amazing innovation in the magazine/publishing industry coming from right here in Royal Oak. Congratulations to the Clear Team! Also be sure to check out the newly relaunched ClearMag.com for the latest issue(s), blog, videos, etc.

The Power of Green Housing

container-condo.jpg

At the last months (likemind) Detroit,.. I invited Leslie C Horn, CEO and co-founder of The Power of Green HousingTM out to tell to us about her 17 unit Container/Condo project being built in Detroit this fall, as well as what we can expect to see in the future.

First off who are you and what do you do?

Leslie Horn, CEO & President and Patric Horn, COO & Project Manager of The Power of Green HousingSM … we are a brother and sister team. Leslie lives in Detroit full time and brother Patric resides in San Diego commuting to Detroit approximately 2 weeks a month. We have rehabbed over 20 houses in the city of Detroit over last 2 year. The Power of Green HousingSM is dedicated to building affordable houses with a savings of 60% energy costs to the end user. We are currently developing Exceptional Green Living on Rosa Parks, a 17 unit condo complex consisting of 1, 2 & 3 bedroom units near Wayne State University and able to build for less than $100/sq foot. After this “prototype” we will take our building into a warehouse and manufacture this type of building lowering our costs by an additional 20-25%.

In addition to the two of us, we continue to build our team of architects, builders, media and marketing professionals, attorneys and associates to promote and propel this company in becoming the leader in green, sustainable and energy efficient housing.

KOR ONE Hydration Vessel

kor_one.jpg

I Love this! KOR ONE >

What started as one man’s attempt to find a decent reusable water bottle has blossomed into one of the sexiest industrial designs of the year. Taking a few visual cues from bottled water packaging Kor ups the ante with a handful of intelligent design choices. Foremost, the vessel (which starts shipping next month and retails for $30) features a hinged snap-cap that allows one to open and drink with a single hand. Unlike typical Sigg bottles (our former vessel of choice), the Kor One has a wide mouth that can accommodate ice cubes and deliver more water on demand. Lastly, consider the bottle’s ovular shape. When viewed from the front, it reminds of an old thermos; only from the side or the top can you see that the vessel has been pinched to provide an easier hand grip. Brilliant.

Wordle

I just saw/read about Wordle over @ Mediasnackers the other day. This is a pretty sweet toy >

Wordle is a toy for generating “word clouds” from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes. The images you create with Wordle are yours to use however you like. You can print them out, or save them to the Wordle gallery to share with your friends.

Lung Ashtray

quitsmoking.jpg

Spotted @ Osocio >

Saatchi & Saatchi London made this for Quit, the stop smoking charity. It shows a set of lungs, transparent in the middle so you can see all the discarded cigarette ends inside the bin.

Great visual to get you thinking about how nasty smoking is for your lungs & health in general.

Reverse Graffiti

This has been around for awhile now,.. but still worth sharing.

Murakami stands at the forefront of international design. Photo by GION

Adweek has a quick Q & A with Takashi Murakami. Excerpt >

What is your design philosophy?
I don’t know if it’s a philosophy, but the thing that impulsively comes to mind as an artist is to step into areas where people don’t go.
