Benetton + Micro Lending

Great project spotted over @ PSFK >

The United Colors of Benetton has teamed up with Senegalese singer Youssou N’Dour for a global campaign in support of Birima, a micro-credit program in Senegal that was founded by the singer. Similar to other micro-finance organizations like Kiva, Birima offers zero interest loans to Senegalese entrepreneurs to get their projects off ground. Additionally, borrowers also receive assistance from Birima advisors on their project and collectively develop a business plan with them.

I love seeing projects like this that make an impact!

TAP Project 2008

tapproject.jpg

The TAP Project is a remarkably simple way to raise money and awareness for the Worlds Water Crisis.

Beginning Sunday, March 16 through Saturday, March 22, restaurants will invite their customers to donate a minimum of $1 for the tap water they would normally get for free. For every dollar raised, one child will have clean drinking water for 40 days. Or 40 children for one day.

Punk Label Donates $1million to Charities

hopeless2.jpg

While other music labels are whining about the music industry. Hopeless records is giving money away to causes!

Sub City record label was created 8 years ago by the newly-prolific punk label Hopeless Records when they reached a point of selling more albums than they needed to support the label itself. Louis Posen - founder and president of Hopeless Records - thought it would be a good idea to start a second label that would be devoted to helping out less-fortunate people through donations and raising awareness. The name Sub City in part describes the subsidies it would provide to non-profit organizations, as well as declaring the underground roots of the music and people who are involved. Today Sub City and Hopeless Records are celebrating their million-dollar-milestone. Between Sub City’s sales proceeds and Hopeless Records’ Take Action Tour, the group have donated more than $1 million USD to more than 50 nonprofit organizations.”

Posen describes the charity structure as such:

“We wanted it to be clear to the fans that when they buy a release, 5 percent of the suggested retail list price is going the charity they see on the back of the record and in the literature in the insert and they know that’s coming from the label and the artist and it’s based on gross, not on profits. So they can be very clear what the donation is, where it’s going and who’s giving it.”

Whining and complaining about your industry doesn’t help anyone. So for all the other labels out there. Take some notes from Hopeless Records.

Something about this story just happened to catch my eye >

Playtex has released a line of glow in the dark lingerie to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its Moonwalk Charity. The Moonwalk Charity was born from Nina Barough’s vision. 10 years ago, Nina and 12 of her friends power walked the New York Marathon in their bras to raise money for Breast Cancer Research. Since the first walk, the charity has raised nearly £27 million. To further build on this concept, the Playtex Moonlit Marathon takes the concept to a new level.
