New Idea Agencies

psfk-conference-nyc-new-idea-agencies1.jpg

At PSFK Conference NYC, Danielle Sacks (Fast Company) led a thought-provoking discussion about the rise of the “New Idea Agencies” - companies that are thinking outside of the traditional client-agency model and creating their own products, brands, and intellectual property to launch direct to market. The panel, featuring Robbie Vitrano (Trumpet), Carl Johnson (Anomaly), Bart Haney (fuseproject), and Ben Malbon (BBH Labs), explained how their companies’ unique business models evolved and the struggles (and benefits) of agencies becoming their own clients.

Developing IP rather than just messaging is clearly an attractive idea. Why build brands that, ultimately, you have no stake in, when you can create your own products and services, under your own supervision and creative direction instead? Agencies like Anomaly and BBH Zag have created their own brands (Avec Eric and Ila, respectively) and are inventing new ways to partner with (or in some cases supercede) clients to create new, truly collaboratively-built brands.

Great panel + a ton of great information and insight. Watch >

Tim Brown: The powerful link between creativity + play

timbrown1.jpg

Another great video from TED!

At the 2008 Serious Play conference, designer Tim Brown talks 28 minutes about the powerful relationship between creative thinking and play.
Tim Brown, President and CEO of the multidisciplinary design firm IDEO, tells how we can learn the most from our shortest creators. Kids can inform our outlook on creativity by looking at exploration, building and role playing, as he explained, “forgetting the adult behaviors that are getting in the way our ideas.”

Next 5,000 Days on the Internet

Kevin Kelly says that if we told people 5,000 days ago what the web was going to offer they would say it was impossible so now we have to expect the impossible for the next 5,000 days. His suggests that we’re constructing a single, global machine and that our handhelds and computers are just windows to that machine. Everything will be connected to the machine and this machine will be the most perfect machine we will have ever made. Must watch this!

Social Media Panel @ PSFK NY ‘08

psfkny.jpg

I unfortunately couldn’t make it out to NY for the PSFK conference in March. The good news is that they just posted video of the panel on Social Media (the one I wanted to check out the most). In a ‘new guns’ versus ‘marketing gurus’ debate, Josh Spear (Undercurrent) & Noah Brier (Likemind) join Marc Schiller (Electic artists) & Steve Rubel (Edelman) to debate how social media will change in 2008 and how companies can leverage this digital phenomenon in the most rewarding way. The panel is moderated by Noelle Weaver (SS+K).

Watch Josh put Steve on the spot about the whole Wal-Mart/Fake blog fiasco. Pretty classic.

TED 2008

ted_logo.gif
Now in its 24th year, TED begins on Wednesday and runs through Saturday. It is an elite event where leaders in technology, entertainment and design gather to cross-pollinate ideas and gain inspiration from presentations on the latest developments in sciences and the arts. As always TED is looking better than ever. Some of the BIG questions that will be asked this year are:

Who are we? What is our place in the universe? What is life? Is beauty truth? Will evil prevail? How can we change the world? How do we create? What’s out there? What will tomorrow bring? What stirs us? How dare we be optimistic? And the point?

Those are definitely some deep questions. TED, which has long been an elite gathering, opened up to a much wider audience after it began posting video of its talks on its website in 2006. According to conference organizers, 200 talks from past TED gatherings have been posted so far and have been viewed around 30 million times. So luckily for us we’ll be able to see this year’s conference once they upload the videos. In the meantime,… go check out some of past presentations here.

Trembled Blossoms - PRADA

Trembled Blossoms, a short film advertising the new Prada line. The goal was to create a classic animated film, from Hollywood’s golden era of the 1930s and 1940s, while employing modern animation and motion capture technology. Reminds me a little of Pan’s Labyrinth. Watch for yourself.
